Delta Iota goes to Russell County

Phi Lambda Sigma-Delta Iota Chapter was recently asked to set up a table at the Russell County Health Expo in Lebanon, VA on October 19th, 2017. The health expo saw vendors from local organizations come to offer information on the services they offer as well as get a free meal and live entertainment. We were also asked to come to the Finney Community Center in Finney VA to provide health screenings during an organization's weekly meeting. During these event, we provided several free health screenings courtesy of Dr. Ben and Chuck Price of Tigerx Pharmacy in Honaker VA. With the help of ACP student volunteers, we provided cholesterol checks, A1C tests, flu shots, medication and lifestyle counseling, as well as blood pressure and blood glucose checks to over 100 attendees. Attendees were very eager to receive these free services, and we were one of the busiest vendors at the expo. We got to meet many wonderful people that were very appreciative of what we were doing. This expo gave us an opportunity educate patients on their current health status, answer any questions they had in regards to their medication or lifestyle changes, and represent the Appalachian College of Pharmacy.

Attendees of the health expo were lining up to receive cholesterol, blood pressure checks, blood glucose checks, A1C tests, flu shots, as well as medication and lifestyle counseling. Students included P3 students Klaire Kingrey, James Steffey, Blake Snead, Clint Justus, Virginia Dinh, and PLS-Delta Iota Class of 2018 President Ryan Endicott

During our visit to the Finney Community Center, we were able to meet with several terrific people and provided free health screenings courtesy of Tigerx Pharmacy in Honaker, VA. We were able to provide blood pressure checks, blood glucose checks, A1C tests, flu shots, and lifestyle counseling to the Finney community. The patients we saw were incredibly receptive and grateful for the services we provided. Many of the patients we met with had been diagnosed with diabetes and/or hypertension and were currently being treated. This gave us a terrific opportunity to stress the importance of medication compliance, health maintenance, and peer interaction.
